Olympiad

The IGU International Geography Olympiad will take place in the University of Maynooth, on 19th to the 24th August 2024.

International Geography Olympiad

The International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) is an annual competition for the best 16 to 19 year old geography students from all over the world. Students chosen to represent their countries are chosen from thousands of students who participate enthusiastically in their own National Geography Olympiads. The iGeo has three aspects, a written assessment, a multimedia assessment and fieldwork requiring observation, leading to cartographic representation and geographical analysis. The programme also includes poster presentations by teams, cultural exchanges, and time for students to get to know their fellow students and explore the host city.

The draft programme is:

Maynooth University is ideal for staff and students taking part in the Olympiad. It is a beautiful campus, within the scenic town of Maynooth. All sessions will be within walking distance of the accommodation and local facilities such as shops, the canal greenway, cafes and the train station. However, we will also visit Dublin city, just a 30 minute train ride away.

Accommodation will be within the university.

There will be an optional 3 day field trip after the Olympiad, including the west and north of Ireland.

During the weeks before IGEO, all schools in Ireland will be invited to take part in events to celebrate Geography. More details to follow.
